The SBDC helped us align our finances, and they were a huge help to us in planning our festival, which is what brought in the investors to get us started. If it hadn't been for the SBDC connection, I doubt we could have made it all happen.

Owner of dyslexic learning center overcomes pandemic challenges to reach clients

With the SBDC's help, Dynamic Dyslexia and Speech opened its doors in November 2019. Like most businesses, they had to close in March 2020 but a donation of face shields allowed owner Jaimee Szymanski to effectively deliver speech therapy sessions while masked and to reach a wider audience by giving free online presentations. She joined the WV SBDC's “Come In, We're Open” social media campaign because “I’m proud to own a small business in West Virginia and was anxious to let everyone know that we are open.” “Small businesses are important because they are personal. I am trying to make my community better: better for the people that currently live here and better for the next generation.”

Felicia Jane Pilates

Felicia Messimer has been working with the Wyoming SBDC Network since she first began thinking of renting space and equipment to start a small, part-time Pilates business. When clientele started to grow, she reached back out to her advisor who helped look at pricing and financial projections to purchase her own equipment. Felicia’s studio has grown and she is now at the point where she is making a decision whether to turn her former side hustle into a full-time job.
