With the encouragement & assistance from the SBDC, I made the decision to stay open. The SBDC was my go-to resource for information on the PPP, EIDL, and Revive Alabama.

Tristen Pattee recognized the lack of tourism in the Native village of Ambler, AK. Inspired by an idea to highlight the beauty of his home and create jobs, he created a business to provide guided backcountry and river tours. COVID-19 allowed Pattee to expand by adding two boats and dome-style buildings to enhance what Onion Portage has to offer. Pattee is excited about the changes. "The domes will have clear panels on the roof that are see-through and you can comfortably lay in your bed as you watch the northern lights or just view the sky and stars." To experience the beauty and wonder of Northwest Alaska for yourself connect with Onion Portage Alaska to plan your once-in-a-lifetime Arctic adventure at www.onionportagealaska.com

Melenaite Atuai became our client around February 2021. She was already a baker before deciding to have her own bakery shop. She moved forward with her own small bakery shop. She found herself a business partner and moved on in getting licensed and rented a facility for her production. She faced so many challenges in trying to go solo. Challenges such as her immigration status and finding a perfect location. She also needed financial assistance, a staff, and a strong support system from families. But none of that stopped her from pursuing what she was passionate about, and that's baking.

Ermanos Craft Beer and Wine Bar Becomes a Streaterie

Ermanos Craft Beer and Wine Bar turned a crisis into an opportunity by engaging the City of Tucson’s “Streateries” program to build a temporary outdoor venue in the parallel parking, on-street area in front of their brick and mortar venue. This provided additional outdoor seating during a time when patrons were reluctant to enter the indoor location due to the high Covid numbers in Tucson. SBDC assisted in the visioning of the outdoor venue. The City of Tucson now has under discussion making the temporary Streateries permanent.

New Locations Increase Access to ASBTDC Services

"I had my grand opening in December of 2019. I was a little nervous, but being able to count on the support of the SBDC and my advisor gave me the courage to continue on. I am comforted knowing that they are always there for me when I need them."

Four institutions of higher education, including two community colleges and an HBCU, joined the ASBTDC network in 2021: ASU Mid-South, ASU-Mountain Home, University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The new regional offices increase access to ASBTDC services for Arkansans wanting to start, strengthen, or grow a business. "We are thrilled to welcome each of these institutions to our network. Our long-time partnership with higher education is a proven delivery system for ASBTDC's entrepreneurial and small business services, and these new offices expand our reach into both rural and urban areas of the state," said State Director Laura Fine. The additions bring the number of ASBTDC offices to 13.
