Costa Rican Native Brings Dream to Life in Trenton

nj
"I had my grand opening in December of 2019. I was a little nervous, but being able to count on the support of the SBDC and my advisor gave me the courage to continue on. I am comforted knowing that they are always there for me when I need them."

Marjorie Rodriguez, a Costa Rican native, was determined to open her bakery and become an entrepreneur. All she wanted to do was to follow her passion: “Bake and Cook.” Marjorie contacted NJSBDC at The College of New Jersey in 2016 and received guidance on the lease agreement, obtaining local permits, and exploring loan options, and developing a business plan. After six months, Marjorie opened La Cabana Bakeshop & Restaurant in Trenton, NJ, purchasing the property in July 2021.

Hector Alverio consulted the Jamestown SBDC for startup assistance, help in developing financial projections, business entity formation and social media marketing. With assistance from Advisor Danny Hickman, Hector’s Hot Spot Café opened on Valentine’s Day 2020. Hector did take out service through the pandemic and thrived with minimal economic assistance. Since restrictions were lifted, city officials, police officers, and downtown business owners regularly visit the cafe for breakfast and lunch. He has expanded his staff to 5. The city of Jamestown asked him to do a food cart downtown and cater downtown events. Hector is in the process of obtaining an on-premises liquor license and will apply for MBE certification.
