Akiak Technology brought broadband and business to Alaska's tribal communities

Kevin and Sharon Hamer started Akiak Technology to provide broadband services to everyone in Alaska’s Akiak tribe and then created the Yukon-Kuskokwim Tribal Broadband Consortium to bring affordable broadband to all 17 tribes (9,000 people). Next came for-profit work — digital transformation, agile software development, DevSecOps, etc. “Our first year in 2020, we had several small contracts that brought in around $4,000 in revenue,” Kevin relates. “This year, our revenue is about $1.5 million through a combination of contracts and grants. The SBDC accelerated our business startup and helped us pivot quickly when we faced new challenges/opportunities,” he concludes. “The SBDC is amazing, one of the major keys to our success.”

MILLENNIALS + GEN-Z

The SBDC helped us align our finances, and they were a huge help to us in planning our festival, which is what brought in the investors to get us started. If it hadn't been for the SBDC connection, I doubt we could have made it all happen.

TECH DEVELOPMENT

Ipsun Solar grew to be one of the largest solar developers in Northern Virginia

Herve Billiet, electro-mechanical engineer, and Joe Marhamati, environmental scientist, founded Ipsun Solar to encourage all Americans to produce their own power using the clean, renewable energy of the sun. Today, that vision remains unchanged and, thanks to help from the Virginia SBDC, Ipsun Solar has grown to become one of the largest solar developers in Northern Virginia. Upon starting, they “immediately went to the SBDC to get the best advice on how to get us quickly from a start-up to a real business,” they explain. Their SBDC advisor’s experience and matter-of-fact advice was extremely valuable, allowing Ipsun Solar to grow from 2 to 50 employees and to serve 300+ customers in 2021.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

Albemarle Limousine grew from one to three companies during the pandemic

When COVID struck, Albemarle Limousine was blindsided and nearly crippled. “We immediately lost 90% of our revenue,” says owner Andrea Saathoff. She went to the SBDC to find ways to diversify. When she found a building with 10 auto bays where she could expand her ACE Auto Center Express business, she went back to SBDC for help. Next, SBDC helped her launch ACE Bicycle Charlottesville. “Riding bikes offered socially-distanced exercise, so our shop was very popular,” Andrea says. “Now all three businesses are in recovery. We have 60 employees, and everything is going gangbusters.” Andrea continues, “They helped us significantly through the pandemic. SBDC has all the resources needed to help a business succeed and grow.”

DISASTER RECOVERY

American Shakespeare Center rebounded from its shut down and gave 80 performances to 10,000 people

Like the rest of Virginia, Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center (ASC) shut down in mid-March 2020. ASC turned to their local SBDC and, with their help, received PPP loans and a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. ASC was then able to get in-person productions up and running again. The head of infectious diseases at the local hospital, a big ACS fan, figured out how to make the productions as safe as possible. “Without a doubt, we would recommend the SBDC,” Amy Wratchford commented. “COVID brought us to the SBDC, but now that we know about the services they offer, we’re excited about working with them in the future.”
