Onion Portage Alaska: Adventures in the Arctic

Tristen Pattee recognized the lack of tourism in the Native village of Ambler, AK. Inspired by an idea to highlight the beauty of his home and create jobs, he created a business to provide guided backcountry and river tours. COVID-19 allowed Pattee to expand by adding two boats and dome-style buildings to enhance what Onion Portage has to offer. Pattee is excited about the changes. "The domes will have clear panels on the roof that are see-through and you can comfortably lay in your bed as you watch the northern lights or just view the sky and stars." To experience the beauty and wonder of Northwest Alaska for yourself connect with Onion Portage Alaska to plan your once-in-a-lifetime Arctic adventure at www.onionportagealaska.com

The AK SBDC's TREND program has been a game changer. It provided my company with the opportunity to secure a Phase I SBIR award from the EPA, bringing $100,000 to Alaska and setting the stage for more funding in the future.

WOMEN-OWNED

Have Your Aurora and Eat it Too!

Ingrid and Jae Shims' adventurous spirits suited them perfectly to Alaska. After settling in Anchorage in 2014, they opened a pastry and chocolate shop called Sweet Chalet. Ingrid had become enamored by the northern lights and turned to chocolate to create an edible version. The new confections led the Shims to rename their business Aurora Chocolate. Jae says that Ingrid has a delicate color sensibility that makes it possible for her to "paint" the auroras in chocolates. She hand-paints layers of cocoa butter into moulds in beautiful patterns reminiscent of the northern lights. The technique is what defines Aurora Chocolate Jae says, "It's unique, just like Alaska!" You can place orders at aurorachocolate.com
